The process, in which stations select slots for transmission, adhering to other stations while avoiding and resolving conflicts.
Several different approaches exist for accessing and allocating transmission slots. These access protocols co-exist and operate in parallel on the link.
A station in autonomous and continuous mode is generally responsible for organization (exception: poll).
A station in assigned mode is generally NOT responsible for organization (exception: time-out and messages of non-repeatable character).
