First of all, where is Japan?
We hope all of you are familiar with the location of Japan in the world. Although we usually draw Japan in the middle of the world map as shown in the left, it is often said Japan is located in the Far East; this is actually true when viewed from western countries.
Japan is an arc of islands, the four large ones - Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and Hokkaido - and thousands of smaller ones lying between the Asian mainland and the Pacific Ocean.

Where is Kyushu and Kitakyushu City?
As shown on the left, Kyushu island is located in the southwest of Japan, and has actually the longest cultural ties to mainland Asia. Kita-Kyushu is, as its name suggests, located in the north of Kyushu island. The City of Kitakyushu was created in 1964 by merging the five largest cities at the northern tip of Kyushu, and is a dynamic city now with over one million people.

How to fly in Fukuoka International Airport
There are many international flights to Japan and then to Fukuoka City (the largest city in Kyushu island) from major international airports in the world. Because Fukuoka is closer to Korea than to Tokyo, we can recommend you to use flights coming through the Incheon (Seoul) new international airport in Korea. As of today, there are 5 direct flights available between Fukuoka and Incheon.
A number of direct flights to Fukuoka are also coming from Asian countries, among which the flights through Hong-Kong are worth checking if you are concerned about the airfare. Of course you will be able to come through Kansai or Narita international airports, which is convenient.

From Fukuoka International Airport to Kitakyushu

There are two major ways to come to Kitakyushu City (conference site) from Fukuoka International Airport.
  1. The highway bus (airport limousine bus) from Fukuoka International Airport to Kitakyushu Kokura Station is available for 1,000 Yen/person, and it takes about 1.5 hours. The buses leave every 20 minutes on average from 8:30 AM to 9:05 PM daily from the international-flight terminal (bus stop No.4) and stop next at the domestic-flight terminal No.1 and then No.3. (The shuttle bus between the international and domestic flight terminals (separate buildings) is also available every 10 minutes free of charge.) The bus stop of Kokura Station is the second last one, where some voluntary guides are waiting with ISOPE sign. Station Hotel Kokura is in front of the bus stop and Rihga Royal Hotel is on the other side of Kokura Railway Station (5-minute walk).

  2. If you have no big luggage, you may use the bullet train (super express train called Shinkansen) from Hakata Railway Station of Fukuoka city. The Shinkansen goes nonstop to Kokura Station, and it takes just 20 minutes and costs 2,050 Yen/person. From Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station, you can use a taxi (about 1,300 Yen) or the subway (250 Yen, just 8-minute ride). The subway station is conveniently located near the domestic-flight terminal.
The distance between Fukuoka Airport and Kitakyushu is too far to take a taxi. It costs probably about 20,000 Yen. Ordinary Japanese don't use taxi when going to Kokura (Kitakyushu) from Fukuoka International Airport.
